Who is your favorite fictional couple, and why?
Jan Netolicky Thanks for asking. This is a tough one, but I'd have to say I've most recently been moved by an unconventional "couple" in Marra's brilliant work, A Constellation of Vital Phenomena. Sonja and Akhmed are flawed but forceful characters who exemplify compassion and who demonstrate that love of humankind can transcend the brutality of war. I think this work should be on everyone's must-read list.

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?
Jan Netolicky In this situation, sadly, art imitated life. An acquaintance who deals with bipolar disorder was the inspiration.

Jan Netolicky I am working on a compilation of related short stories, set in the Pacific NW.

How do you deal with writer’s block?
Jan Netolicky Often, I need to separate myself from the manuscript. Distance gives different perspective.
