Being able to tell a story, to share an experience with my readers, to make a connection through time and space to a shared collective memory, of that time we all read that one book by that one guy.

Honestly, the best advice I can give you is to just start writing - even if it's all wrong, just start writing. You can always fix it later, right?
Don't ignore that inner voice! You have a story to tell, and all you need to do is shove it through your fingers into the keyboard. Let yourself go, throw away your inhibitions and your fears, and make it happen!
Above all, don't be scared or worried. Don't write for fame or fortune, just write for yourself - tell the story you most want to hear, and if you enjoy it, the chances are really quite good there will be at least a few people out there that will as well!
Honestly, and I say this with all seriousness, my books are by far my favorite. I read and re-read them, I've read them countless times by now. I love the immersion, the depth - I like all the little side thoughts that come up as I read, memories of thoughts I had when I was writing this line, or that line, things in my life that I immortalized in my books (little things no one would notice).
You have to love the work you do, be your biggest fan... but also be your worst critic. Just don't be so critical that you never get started!

I am currently writing APEX, the next book in the Archaea series. It's chock full of crazy action, adventure and fun. More fun than you can shake a stick at.

I find inspiration in many things, but it essentially comes from within. I have a story inside, burning to get out - it consumes me, really. More than a 'muse', it's sort of an addiction at this point!
