I recommend two things. The first is reading, watching the world around you, and practicing describing scenes, people, and everything. The second is keeping a journal—no, make that several journals with supplementary lists of things to do. Not documenting your days and jotting down wish lists is how the best ideas are lost to time. I should be much more organized both as a writer and a person. Don't be me.

I read a wide variety of books, but I find I need at least one guilty pleasure book from a favorite author. For this, I enjoy character-driven series. I enjoy authors like Jim Butcher, Craig Johnson, Janet Evanovich, and Louise Penny. I like characters who have some self-humor mixed in with unique abilities. These are the types of characters I wanted to put in my series and drop them in my Portland, Oregon, haunts.

Good question. The main story comes from a recurring dream about a beautiful princess, a young shaman in training, his elderly guru, and the creatures that the locals called the Ancestors. The book follows a rough outline of the vivid dreams I had over a period of several weeks. I do not think of the experience as coming from a spirit guide, but it did feel 'gifted' to me. I think I was receiving the story and simply retelling it with embellishments. :) I hope that answers your question.
