Samuel Z. Jones Which one? The most recently finished is "The Headsman's Daughter". That, seriously and without any deliberate pretension, hit me entire just as I was going to sleep one night. I lurched awake, roused the laptop, and hammered out a dozen pages of notes.

That isn't generally how it works for me (wish it did). Usually, one story grows from another: I start noticing passages and episodes emerging that take place years apart from the timeline of the present story. Those passages eventually reach a critical-mass of words that's sufficient to properly call the start of a story unto itsel.
Samuel Z. Jones So many things! At present I am mostly writing...

"The Queen of Korcha Morava" - A Fantasy novel about taming wyverns.
"Nine Dacoit Masters" - A martial-arts Fantasy.
"Kali Daishen" - A Fantasy novel about an army from the future.
"A Child is Given" - A Fantasy novel about parenthood.
"The Hrinori War" - A Fantasy novel about a war against the cat-people.
"Voyages of The Black Dog" - A series of Fantasy novellas about airships, with co-author CH Clepitt and contributing author Thomas Duder.

I routinely write 3-6 novels at once, spending 3-5 years on each, finishing two a year on average.

Various other projects, on spec and for clients. Recently, I edited and published "Orin Rakatha - Where Worlds Collide" for Herofest Live-Action Roleplay, a fully-illustrated showcase of their Fantasy setting. I'm in the early stages of another LARP-based book along the same lines.
Samuel Z. Jones I... just... am. It's like breathing, I'm not sure how one stops. Maintaining the right space, physical and mental, to actually write is an entirely other thing.
Samuel Z. Jones Abandon Hope, All Ye Who Enter Here.

Or, spend years writing before even considering publication. Years. Pursue and ideally succeed at another career first. Develop experience to fuel your writing and focus on financial stability before embarking on writing professionally.
Samuel Z. Jones The wealth, fame and beautiful women hurling themselves at my... No, wait that's not being a writer at all.
Samuel Z. Jones I bash my brain against the keyboard until the ideas bleed onto the screen. Metaphorically. There is no "cure", there is the proper life-balance of support and stress that's conducive to writing.
