J.R. Rogers Any number of ways: something I read about, see on TV, hear on the radio or even something someone mentions. I write novels of foreign intrigue and espionage set in different countries so when I learn something interesting about a certain city or country, I first select that location and then weave a plot there.
J.R. Rogers I do other things, for instance watch TV, take my dog to the dog park or cook. The idea is to just get away from it. I've had many instances of what I considered horrible writer's block but eventually the fog always lifts, sometimes dramatically. I often suffer blocks that last for weeks - once 2 months - but in the end being away from the manuscript it seems to me is often useful and insightful.
J.R. Rogers My sixth novel of intrigue and espionage - working title The Eliminator - is set on the island of Cyprus in 1974. See this link to my web page for details:

J.R. Rogers SImple: read, read, read! The more you read, or have read, the more this will grease your ability to shape story lines, finds clever ways to untangle plots, write believable dialogue and generally add to your vocabulary.
J.R. Rogers This is such a huge question for me but as a fiction writer I really enjoy being able to immerse myself in another world, create characters with enviable traits and not so likeable flaws and imagine situations that I might actually find myself in.
J.R. Rogers I gave a rather lengthy explanation about this on a guest blog not too long ago for M.K. Tod. Here's the link: http://goo.gl/SlNIkN
