It's probably a mystery to many people in high school how I became a pastor and author. No one saw that coming, including me! It's pretty fascinating how God works all the twists and turns of a life to get a person to where they can be used for his purpose.

Oh, I am so not a fictional reader. Sorry to disappoint you! Although I have started to read some fiction in recent years as a way to destress and disconnect. I've read a few Jack Reecher books and John Grisham. But as far as a fictional couple, I've got nothing.

I enjoy putting my thoughts on paper...mapping them out to see how it all fits together, and then seeing those thoughts help other people. Every note, telling me that one of my books changed their life, makes for a very good day.

Write things that will help and inspire people from your own experience. Many people are getting into the writing business these days just to turn a fast buck. The motivation is purely selfish. I can't believe good things will come from that in the long run for the readers or the author. So check your motivations. You want to be proud of your work and know that it encouraged others.

I just started writing a book for people who are stuck in some kind of a spiritually abusive situation. Many of my friends got sucked into a toxic church and I was shocked to realize how easily it happened to them and the deep impact it had. I want to offer practical, "how-to" advice to people in these situations. A relationship with God shouldn't be an oppressive experience. By the way, if you'd like to be a part of a team that offers me input from your spiritually abusive experience, please contact me.

I HAVE to write a sermon every week. No excuses. So I don't lack for writing material. But the inspiration comes from deeper than that. It's a combination of seeing the needs of the people in my congregation and sensing what I think God would have them know (based on my understanding of the Bible). I am very passionate about helping people overcome life's struggles with God's help. That makes writing easy for me.

"Return from Exile" came out of a sermon series initially. The Bible is full of exile stories. When I applied the idea of exile to the loss that we experience in life, it really hit home for people. I then shared this message for a group of pastor couples, and again, it made a big impact. It made me realize that I had stumbled across a theme that could encourage a lot of people so I turned it into a book.
