Waking up. I'm a writer, so it's what I do every day. What inspires you to brush your teeth?

Write. Finish something. Finish something else. Don't expect your first writing projects to be very good. Finished writing a book? Great. Start writing the next one.
Read. Read good books. Read bad books. Try to understand what works in those stories (or what doesn't), and why.
Listen. Listen to what real people tell you about their lives. Listen to how they tell it. Listen to the words they use. Listen for what they don't say.
Create. Create something beautiful that will inspire acts of creation in others. The greatest act of courage is to create something while everyone else around you is trying to tear down the world.
You. Be you. Forget the voices in your head. Forget your ambitions and fears. Write until your unique voice sings out loudest and stuns the rest of the choir into silence.

The best thing about being a writer is being able to focus all of my imagination and effort into projects I want to pursue. I work for myself, not for anyone else. I have customers (my readers), but ultimately, I decide how best to reach those readers and keep them happy.

Freewriting or posing "what-if" questions really get the juices flowing for me.

The school bus driver never looked back after the accident, which is too bad. The fumes from the overturned tanker trunk had turned his passengers into ravenous zombies.

Fictional book worlds are created by authors, and as luck would have it, I am an author who creates fictional book worlds. I've spent a lot of time in those worlds, visualizing and creating them. They are known places to me. Right now, I'd say I would venture into Fornborg, Minnesota on the Rabbit Chain of Lakes. The year is 1975, and the Fisker family has just inherited their uncle's lake resort. A group of men in a heritage club (aka "The Norwegian Pontoon Mafia") run the area. Lots of quirky characters and a strong sense of place within the small town setting. Then again, I really enjoy my real world: trees, garden, solitude, writing, and a pile of books.

There are several mysterious incidents that spring to mind from my past. One of which I have tried to put into a short story, but I don't think it did the job, and I may need to try again. It involved a series of synchronicities on Halloween leading up to my wife being strangled by a man claiming to be a vampire.
