Isabel Morin I just bought Margaret Atwood's "The Handmaid's Tale." I haven't read it in ages and I want to reread it before watching the new Hulu series. I also have Bruce Springsteen's memoir on deck. I've been reading Sarina Bowen's The Ivy Years series, so that's on the list, and "The Zookeepers Wife" is already waiting for me on my Kindle. Now I just need a few juicy historicals to round out that list.
Isabel Morin I wouldn't say I get blocked, exactly. Sometimes it feels too hard and I procrastinate. I tend to feel that way in the early stages of writing, before I really know my characters. I'm fumbling around at that point and it's tricky. But the solution to that is to put my butt in the chair and write, even if I'm writing drivel. You need to get the juices flowing. Later in a story I sometimes lose my way and feel like I've gone off track. When that happens I go back to the beginning and read all the way through again. That usually sets me straight.
Isabel Morin Usually I'm imagining characters I'd like to be or read about. For instance, I'm a huge ballet fan and am fascinated by the life of ballet dancers, so that informed the novella "Set Loose." "Tempt Me" was about a woman who meets a guy at her going away party and he asks her to stay with him for a while. That actually happened to me, except that I didn't stay. : ) I decided to write a story asking the question: "What if I had?" Ass for the men in my books, I imagine someone I would fall for. Hard.
Isabel Morin I'm nearly done with a new adult romance. All my other characters were in their late twenties or thirties , so this is a change of pace. It's still very steamy, though. That hasn't changed!
Isabel Morin Getting to live in another character's head. It's kind of like acting for people who can't act or are afraid of being in front of other people.
Isabel Morin Hands down it's Claire and Jamie from the Outlander series. Jamie is the ultimate, Claire is an amazing, strong character, and I got to read (and re-read) about them over many books. And they're still going!
