The latest book is Home Attitude: Everything You Need To Know To Make Your Home Smart. Home automation has been one of my hobbies for more than 30 years. I read about the subject and I practice it through my hobby. I like to make complicated topics simple for lay people to read. I like to share ideas and things I have learned. I knew home automation would be useful to people as the topic has become more commonplace.

My inspiration to write comes from several sources. First is reader feedback. When someone says they really look forward to reading my weekly e-brief at johnpatrick.com, I am inspired to keep writing. The second source is reviews on Amazon about my books. Equally important is reading. When I read something impactful, it inspires me to contribute to body of knowledge on the topic.

My first book was Net Attitude. After completing a doctorate in health administration I was inspired to write Health Attitude. It was based on the concept that big problems and big solutions revolve around attitude. Number three was Election Attitude - How Internet Voting Leads to a Stronger Democracy and then Home Attitude: Everything You Need To Know To Make Your Home Smart. I have several Attitude books in mind. I will be thinking about during the holidays and start outlining and research in the new year.

The best way to become a good writer is to do a lot of reading. Find a writer you really like and can emulate. It is also good to find a writer you do not like and avoid writing like him or her.

Writing helps you express a point of view and potentially make a difference for readers. I like the feeling from learning something new and sharing it with others. Perhaps the best thing is the feedback. You may not always like it, but over time feedback has an influence and makes you a better writer.
