Carla Croft Writer's block is not a problem for me. Well, it hasn't been to date! I find the problem is finding quality time to write. Not only do I work full time and long hours but I tend to respond so much to requests for assistance from others that I get side tracked. Whether it is beta reading, promoting their work or helping with formatting queries I get further and further away from writing sometimes. I hate to say no and I love the buzz of writing so much I want everyone to experience that feeling. I may have to start saying no or all the books I have in my mind may never get written down.
Carla Croft When the writing is going well there is a real sense of a 'flow' experience. Time stands still, the characters and the story reveal themselves effortlessly. The story starts to dictate what it needs and where. Hopefully there is a communication not just of the story but the emotion within. One reviewer said that she cried her eyes out when she finished the story of Miyuki. That touched me deeply. I knew at that moment that I had relayed what I had intended.
Carla Croft My advice for aspiring writers is to read (lots); then start writing for yourself. You have to love reading and writing because writing is so difficult. If you don't agonise over which exact word you need to chose or where a comma must, or must not go, then you won't fully communicate to the reader. Finally you have to live what you write to the point where the story writes itself.
Carla Croft I am currently working on the sequel to Miyuki. The name of the main character is revealed at the end of Miyuki, her name is 'Izzie'. She is very different to Miyuki but just as fascinating (as is her partner). I am very excited about this new book but it is proving difficult to write. I want it absolutely perfect, so it may be a little while yet before it gets out.
Carla Croft Like Miyuki in the book, I get inspired by little moments in life that I find intriguing. It maybe a snippet of conversation, a vignette of passing life or a thought or memory that enters into my mind for no reason. After that the story writes itself. I just listen and write it down.
Carla Croft If you mean Miyuki, my most recently published book, I had the story going round in my head for sometime. The story didn't really form fully until the name Miyuki came to my attention. After that the story literally wrote itself. If you mean the book I am currently writing (the sequel to Miyuki) well it was a natural progression from the first story. It has different characters of course but hopefully people will enjoy it as much.
