My current book (the 4th in the series) was inspired by a murder in Aspen, Colorado. I borrowed the idea of a rich person etc... but set it in Chicago with different circumstances. The story comes to me as I write.

That's tricky. I get up every day with the top priority of sitting and writing or trying to write. Just have the intention and don't judge your daily output. Accept your limitations and respect your concentration abilities. We're not created equal on that level, which sucks. But work with what you have.

The third in my detective series Gold Coast Blues is in the final stages of editing. I've since started the fourth in the series, which is still untitled.

If there's something you would rather be doing, do it. Don't write for fame or fortune. There's no formula equating good writing and getting published, or getting published and making money. Write because you have to. You have no choice, you must do it.

Hard to answer. It's only recently that I've felt good about being a writer even though I've been doing it for 20 plus years. If one is making a living, then the answer can be the freedom of not having to go to a job. I've only gained that freedom in the last year. After the third book comes out in September, and if it starts earning me a better living, then I'm going to feel pretty damn good about being a writer.

I usually remind myself to keep it simple. Just think about the start of the next scene. Set the background etc.... Remind myself what should happen next to keep things logical, flowing. So far it works pretty well.
