I go work on a different work in progress because I usually have at least 2 or 3 going at once. Or I'll read a book.

Read good books in the genre you're interested in writing. Practice! Don't give up! This is a career where you get a lot of rejection. You'll either have to learn to deal with it (politely most of the time unfortunately!) or you'll end up wanting to quit. Take the constructive and forget the mean.
