Adam J. Johnson By reading. Lots of reading. The Bible, theologians from throughout the history of the church, some contemporary works (but not too many)... The more I read, the more I have to say.
Adam J. Johnson I am currently editing two books, and writing a third. The first as the "T&T Clark Companion to the Atonement," which will be a roughly 600 page collaborative work with scholars from around the world exploring the doctrine of the atonement and its key figures, topics, and the ways it relates to or is shaped by other doctrines.

The second is a Zondervan Press "5 Views on the Extent of the Atonement," with representatives from Reformed, Wesleyan, Catholic and Orthodox churches, with a Barthian thrown in for good measure.

The third is a short little book for Lexham press, exploring the work of Christ as a work of wisdom. It is meant to be a quick little introduction to the doctrine, yet a creative one, which offers a distinct approach to the doctrine.
Adam J. Johnson I didn't try to write until I had something to say. And before I had that, I had to dive into my field (the doctrine of the atonement), becoming as well versed in the classical sources and contemporary debates as I could possibly be. Eventually, I found that I had something to say, and writing came easily - but only then.
Adam J. Johnson The best thing about being a writer? Submitting to the subject matter, and learning, learning, learning. Learning to think. Learning to see connections. Learning to apply the material to new situations or topics. I find over and over again that I think I have something figure out, but as I put pen to paper, or fingers to keyboard, that feeling vanishes as I type, and the process of writing is in fact the process of learning.
