L.A. Willis When I find myself blocked, it's usually because the story is telling me I am on the wrong path. I will try rewriting a scene from a different point of view. Or sometimes I have to go back a ways to find where I took the wrong turn. Sometimes I have to take a day off and let the problem simmer in the back of my mind. Sometimes I work on a different project and the solution will come to me.
L.A. Willis Watching your characters evolve into 3 dimensional complex beings. When a character does something surprising. Sometimes they take the reins and run away from you. Sometimes it works and makes the story better. Sometimes it doesn't and you have to fight with them to regain control.
L.A. Willis Write write write write. Take some writing classes if you can. Find a writers group where you can get constructive feedback. Believe in yourself enough to help you through those rough patches of self doubt when you think you are the worst writer in the world. Those doubts happen to everyone, no matter how many books you publish.
Don't let anyone stop you. I think Lois McMaster Bujold once said something along the lines of, you have to take that time to write, because no one is going to give it to you. Too true.
L.A. Willis Currently working on the third book of the Crown of Light series. Legacy follows our heroes as they continue to rebuild the devastated empire only to run across a new enemy that is more advanced with bigger ships and bigger guns. Also outlined a new book I am going to work on soon.
L.A. Willis I have to write. It's more of a compulsion than inspiration. Inspiration is a fickle thing. It will desert you when you need it most. It's better to establish a writing routine. Mine starts at 4AM, Monday through Friday. That is the time where I will be least distracted by family and pets. Some days I get more done than others, but I always get at least a few hundred words written. On good days it's a few thousand.
L.A. Willis To be honest, it started out years ago as Star Wars fan fiction but quickly escaped. I chased it down and worked hard training it and myself to turn it into its very own story.
