Dear Astrid, I just have one question for you concerning a scene in my story. Toward the end, the heroine Jodhi is upset because two men she knows are going to do a holmsgang. The problem here is, I don’t know how to make the duel turn out. I don’t want to make one or both men be killed off because she’s already endured enough loss. But I don’t want to be too predictable, either. How would you fix it?
A.M. Westerling Hello Ashlynne, oh my goodness, your story sounds exciting. Hmm. Okay, I don't know your characters but perhaps one of the combatants could lose or drop his weapon and the other one lowers his weapon and walks away because "There's no honor in killing an unarmed man." Or another suggestion - is Jodhi watching the battle? Could she intervene somehow ie grab a weapon from a bystander and approach the two for the reason you mentioned, that she's endured enough loss. "I bid you stop. There has been too much death already." Food for thought, if nothing else, perhaps to get your creative juices going! Great to hear from you! Let me know what you decide with the scene. :)

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?
A.M. Westerling Sit down and write the book. It doesn't matter how bad it is, or how bad you think it is! It's a starting point, something to work with and improve upon. Take a course or two about the craft of writing and apply what you've learned. :)
