Simon Hertnon The idea for my current book, The Julian Calendar, came about 26 years ago when I wise family friend counselled me to write my first novel about something I knew well. At that time, I only knew about my own messy love-life and the amazing new friendship I had developed with a gay man who was 40 years my senior. So I decided to write about that, despite having a dozen other story ideas queued up. Now it's taken me 25 years to publish the novel, but I'm a much better writer now and those other stories are still there. One of them will be my next novel, Par Avion.
