I just finished reading “The Dead Drink First” and I want to thank you for helping me to understand the emotional challenges my husband faced after returning from active duty in Vietnam years ago. I also want to point out that both my husband and I had fathers who had rages and were abusive and neither of them had war experiences. Was that kind of behavior just more acceptable for men of that generation?

Thanks for reachng out. I hope your husband is doing okay--I really hoped this Audible podcast would reach veterans of all wars. I agree that in that generation such things were accepted. In my father's case, if that were true, it greatly excerbated it, I believe. My aunt, his sister, said he was not violent like that before he went into the service. I quote her in the book version of this story, which is way more detailed than the podcast.
