Jon McDonald I have always loved the British movie The Lady Killers. In that story a little old lady foils a group of thugs looking to pull a heist. And that gave me the idea to write a heist movie where a group of kids complicate the plot. And as each of my other novels involves a different genre type I wanted to tackle the heist novel in my own genre-bending way.
Jon McDonald I don't look for inspiration exactly. I guess I would say my inspiration comes from my characters. Writing for me is an organic process. I don't preplan a plot but let my characters lead me along the way. Often times what I consider to be a minor character will suddenly develop into a major character and take the story in a completely different direction. And that is a lot of fun.
Jon McDonald I have just finished the first draft of a romantic heist film Lights - Camera - Heist! A Romantic Misadventure. I consider myself a genre-bending writer and love to play around with traditional genres and mix it up a bit. There is always humor on whatever I do. So no matter what the genre is the humor is always there.
Jon McDonald Get lots of personal experience. I could never have written what I have without having led a full life. Even though you may be writing fiction you are reaching from deep within your world view. Let the writing come from your truth. That is what is real and will connect you with the reader.
Jon McDonald Creating a landscape of wonderful characters. They become like new friends or family and lead me through the discovery of the story. Although I might have a general idea of what the story will be about it is only by getting to know the characters that the story fully develops. That is a wonderful experience and a never ending joy.
