J.D. Proffitt I really enjoy the research. My three novels are historical fiction, and I did extensive research for each one. The first one took 7 years. I had so much fun I decided to write the others. My readers have praised the historical aspect of my works.
J.D. Proffitt Writing must be a labor of love. If it becomes an unwanted chore, you've lost it.
J.D. Proffitt I just uploaded the manuscript for my third novel to CreateSpace. I hope to have the book ready in the fall of 2015. This completes the trilogy.
J.D. Proffitt I suppose that a deal of my inspiration to write came in the same manner as James Fenimore Cooper's experience. His wife challenged him to write a novel when he complained about the poor quality of the stuff he was reading. I felt the same way. There is so much garbage out there. I felt I could do better, so I tried. Time will tell if I succeeded or not.
J.D. Proffitt I don't have a daily quota for pages written, so I don't have a block when it comes to writing. I write when I get something to write about. I believe that writers block is a self-inflicted wound that's unnecessary. It haunts those who are driven to mass production, those who measure their success by the numbers rather than the quality of the product.
J.D. Proffitt As a young boy, I played in the ruins of the stockyards near the Wabash Railroad depot in Alexander where my grandfather worked as the station agent. He'd been placed there after he lost a leg as a brakeman. As he taught me the code on his telegraph key, he talked about the days when John T. Alexander shipped cattle out of this place to feed the Union during the Civil War. The cattleman banked a million dollars by the time the war ended, then he proceeded to lose every penny of it. How this happened is the subject of "Fever Run: A Novel Based on a True Story."
