Dan Bernstein I started playing trombone in fourth grade and, now in my 70s, continue to play in various groups, including a jazz band and brass quintet. I have also played as a volunteer at assisted-living facilities and a Riverside hospital, where residents, patients, staff members and passersby have often told me their own musical stories. Many of them are quite short: I played an instrument in high school but gave it up and have regretted it ever since. This is where I got the idea for my soon-to-be published memoir, ‘He Kept His Day Job: Fanfare for the Common Musician.’ My hope is that it will inspire others to take their instruments out of the case and start playing again even if, like me, they haul in little or no money at all.
Dan Bernstein I don’t think of it as writer’s block. I think of it as a navigating my way through a maze by asking, ‘What if?’ Sooner or later, there’s an answer. It’s part of the creative process.
Dan Bernstein Yes, I am. I worked for the Press-Enterprise for thirty-six years, including thirty-two as a columnist. I retired in 2014. Hope that helps.
