I am currently working on a book about the making of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, specifically the involvement of ordinary Canadians in the Special Joint Committee of the Senate and the House of Commons on the Constitution between October 1980 and 1981. Something special happened at this committee: for the first and only time, ordinary Canadians from across the land contributed to the making of our Constitution.
