Several years ago, I heard an article on NPR about the destruction that mountaintop removal coal mining had done to the surrounding land and people in West Virginia. It stirred up my emotions more than probably anything I had ever heard on the radio before, and I couldn’t get it out of my mind. I did further research on MTR, and it cried out for a story. I’ve always had an interest in solar power, so I decided to combine these two elements into a story with a natural conflict. The result is Coalshine.
