Dallas Sutherland I've studied a lot of children's literature and read a lot of fantasy novels over the years. I like fantasy because it can do and say so many different things. I don't really know where the idea came from. I just began to write, and the more I wrote, the more I researched and the more the story took shape.

I began with 2 characters, a scene, and a grey emotional landscape. Everything follows from the initial scene. It is here that the tone of the story is set.
Dallas Sutherland I'm interested in myths and faery tales. These provide inspiration for my current work. Apart from that, the initial idea provides the spark of inspiration which leads to a thirst for knowledge and a longing to put pen to paper.
Dallas Sutherland I'm working on the second book in my fantasy series of novellas for children aged 9 to 13. I think it will be called The Thinking.
Dallas Sutherland Study the craft of writing, and begin. Or, begin, and then study the craft of writing. Write about what interests you.
Dallas Sutherland I do a lot of thinking, and I suppose the best thing about being a writer is being able to put your ideas down on paper, and explore them through the creative process of writing.

Essentially, I am a creative person- I need to be doing something creative most of the time; that's my enjoyment in life.
Dallas Sutherland I don't really get writers block. All I have to do is start and one thing follows another. If I'm feeling stuck, I go back over the last chapter and begin to edit, and by the time I've reached the end of that, I'm ready to move forward again.
