If you could travel to any fictional book world, where would you go and what would you do there?
Jeremy Worman The Dublin of James Joyce's DUBLINERS (1914). I would live there for a year and then decide whether I wanted to return to my Hackney world of now (I probably would)! For all the brilliant tensions, repressions and doubts expressed in DUBLINERS, there was too in that world a conviviality and connectedness that today's London dweller has lost.

What books are on your summer reading list this year?
Jeremy Worman I am determined to read Th.omas Mann's THE MAGIC MOUNTAIN!

I want to read yet again T.S. Eliot's FOUR QUARTETS.

What’s the best thing about being a writer?
Jeremy Worman The freedom it allows me to explore all areas of life. I also like the way that my writing shapes me: it determines how I plan my days, and my life. I am lucky to have the freedom in the later stage of my life to do this.

I love the research that goes into shaping a historical novel.

How do you get inspired to write?
Jeremy Worman I have an idea, a theme, an image, a situation -- and then I tease out some kind of plan for it. It may work out, it may not, but it keeps the imagination flowing and that is vital.

How do you deal with writer’s block?
Jeremy Worman I write unconscious verse -- just letting it all out. It seems to be a way of finding again the me in my writing.

I go to an art exhibition.

I cook a nice meal and drink lots of wine!

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?
Jeremy Worman Stay hopeful! Write a little (or more) each day. Find a few writers you admire and learn deeply from them. Be clear about what it is you want to write, and why.

Jeremy Worman A novel set in 1970s Hackney, north-east London.

I am writing two articles about ecocriticism.

I am completing a few microfictions.
