I suppose he is as brave as the Caine character but Lt.Bromhead, in reality, was nothing like the Caine character. He was older (33) had a beard and was so deaf that his men had to shout at him to be heard. The Jack Roberts character is a fictitious one. I wanted a hero with flaws but one that was a sympathetic one for my readers.

I discovered the character of Sir John Hawkwood and that he was the most famous mercenary leader in Italy. I wanted to find out more about him and when I did I created a whole series. My latest book is about his greatest victory at Castagnaro.
