John Ruane I am not a fan of horror. Life can be horrible enough. I never understood readers or movie fans of horror. I knew a young lady in college named Louise, who was the nicest girl. I knew her in grammar school. She was nothing but sweet and nice. When she told me she loves horror books and movies, I was stunned. I would have never guessed. Another friend of mine, Jim O'Heir, who is a REALLY nice guy and famous from his role on the office, is another one who loves dark stories. I just don't know what to make of it. Don't judge a person by how nice they seem?
John Ruane I would accompany the protagonist on his journey in Life of Pi, a wonderful book!
John Ruane The biographies of Ulysses S. Grant and George Washington.
John Ruane Who hid my ice skates before a road trip to play the University of Illinois? Found them hidden in a stove in our basement. Hidden again before a tryout with the minor league hockey team, the Fort Wayne Comets, which prevented me from trying out. Both times I opened my hockey bags only to find that my skates were not in there.
John Ruane I never get writers block. I'm actually the opposite. I have so many things I want to write about. I just hope I live long enough to write them all.
John Ruane Creating great stories that impact people's lives in a positive way is extremely rewarding. Writers start with nothing except an idea, an inspiration. Then we develop that idea into a real story. As a playwright, I wrote scenes and am able to direct them on a stage. Actors have a lot to do with how the characters come out, which is great. As a journalist, I write about what I have witnessed, or whom I have interviewed, and try to bring the reader with me to share the experience. As a novelist, I create the story from an inspiration, motivated to the point where I need to write a full story so readers can feel that same inspiration, and appreciate the perspective. The best thing about being a writer however, is just being able to sit and write, work, create. I love it! I absolutely love it!!
John Ruane 1. If you believe you have the talent to write and love writing, then write. And keep writing. You will face many challenges, obstacles, negativity, but if you believe in yourself and your talent, keep writing. Don't just stick your foot in the water. Jump in! And when you are published, you will find out from a host of anonymous readers what you do well.
2. Don't give your work to friends or family to read for their review, before you are published. Give it to a few editors, who don't know you, and can give you their opinion. And remember, it's just an opinion, but it won't be tainted by any personal relationship. Bottom line, you just want a few honest opinions.
John Ruane With The Real News! now available, I turned my attention to my first novel titled, "A Dangerous Freedom." It's the story of a young couple who are ardent gun-control supporters but find themselves on the site of three terrorists attacks, which forces them to face the decision about purchasing a gun to protect themselves. Until better gun legislation is put in place in America, we are all faced with that same dilemma.

This novel is about a real American hero - no capes, no iron, he can't fly, he's real! And ironically, he saves people with a gun, and he hates guns! It's a wonderful story of love, courage, integrity, standing up to bullies, resisting racism, doing the right thing for the sake of society. I'm very excited about the novel. I believe it's my best work.
John Ruane I have been reading the news my entire life and I find it impossible not to be inspired by the events of the day. It's what drew me to work in the news business and inspired me to join the Second City Theater workshops to train in writing satire.
John Ruane We are living in the most chaotic political times our lifetime, to be sure. Our President is the most controversial man in the world and his words and actions have resulted in millions of angry Americans, as well as people across the world. I'm not speaking to his policies, but just how he conducts himself. Given that on-going scenario, I know many wonder what is really going on in that White House. What's the truth? News hosts can speculate on it and most seem to have an agenda. As an independent with no agenda, I wrote satirical stories about what is really going on in the Oval Office and on Capitol Hill. It's not a bash book, just a fun read. So if you follow the news, have a good sense of humor and would like a fun read, this is the book for you. If you read it, I would appreciate your opinion. Thank you. JBR
