The story that comes to mind is the Black Cauldron series, which I guess is called the Chronicles of Prydain. I'm not sure what age I was, but I remember being seriously impressed by the number of 'L's in Lloyd Alexander's first name. I wrote him a fan letter and HE ACTUALLY WROTE BACK. It was basically the coolest thing that ever happened to me.
