Write as soon as it hits you. Save your book as a Google doc and when something pops into your head type it out on your phone, no matter where you are.

Currently working on a book set in the same universe as Paladins tentatively titled The Pent: Stirring. Very similar to Paladins in that a young man is being recruited to a secret organization that deals with the paranormal. The big difference being that the organization is magic in nature rather than divine.
Also his mentor is a total dick. It's kind of like Harry Potter if Dumbledore was more like Rick Sanchez.
The goal is to establish a few different franchises/protagonists as short novellas and then do some really fun Avengers-style crossover stories. I have scenes in my brain for 4-5 books down the line. I just have to write the path to that scene.

My inspirations for Paladins are many and varied but the biggest literary-wise would be Larry Correia's MHI, Jim Butcher's Dresden Files, Kevin Hearne's Iron Druid Chronicles, and AUD by Chris Philbrook.

I commute 10 hours per week so my brain is imagining all kinds of weird monsters and cool action scenes constantly. From there it's just the small struggle of trying to get all of that junk out of my brain and into the keyboard.
