1) Write. Don't be afraid, don't let fear paralyze you. Deep within our souls we are all story tellers. Put the pen to paper or put your fingers on they keyboard or hit record on your recording device, and let the story pour out.
2) Hire editors before hitting publish. Seriously -- Do not skip this step! Hire a developmental editor. Listen to their advice and do the work. Then hire a copy editor and make their changes.
3) Find yourself a writing community. No matter how big or small, find at least one person who is going through the journey too. It will be a tremendous help to you to have someone to cheer you on, pick you up when you're down in the pits of writer's despair, and nod their heads because they know exactly what you're going through.
4) Give NANOWRIMO a try! That was how I got started (no one will ever see that manuscript!), and I'm so very glad I did it. Google it. You'll be so glad you did! :-)
