That's a very good question.
I think the hardest relationship to write was that between Will Montague, the prince and other boys in Edward's household.. One might think they'd all become close friends, but a line in Ian Mortimer's "The Perfect King", implied Will wasn't well liked. I used that to portray Will as having an 'entitled' attitude and bristling at any imagined affront.
On the other hand, Edward's relationship with Joan was easy to write. Joan joined the Queen's household shortly after Edward's birth and young kids seem to form friendships almost completely regardless of whether their 'friends' are girls or boys. I used the experiences I shared with my own best childhood friend, a boy named Nicky, as the basis for Joan and Edward's friendship. I think they got along because I imagined Joan wasn't a typical girly-girl and didn't mind getting dirty. That and Edward wasn't the "prince' to her, he was her 'friend'. That could be quite refreshing to Edward as so many were nice to him because he was 'the prince' not because they really liked him.
