I was living in a cooperative cohousing community, a beautiful place that I really loved and that was also rife with challenges and conflict. One summer I took a trip to Greece and spent a few days on Santorini Island, which is the rim of an ancient volcano. The image of people building their houses on a volcano stuck with me, and it captured the paradoxes of living in community. Later the metaphor grew and called me to write a story, and as I worked on the story I could see how the volcano metaphor applied to many areas of my life.
