For new novels, I often get a new idea when I'm 70% through with my current novel. That can be problematic, since I want to explore this new idea as soon as possible, and thrilling because I know I have something to look forward to next.
For short stories / novellas, the idea usually comes from a call for submissions. By being given just a general theme, I can explore what it means to me and where I want to take my characters from there.

It depends on the day and the deadline. At any one time, I'll be working on a short story for an anthology, editing an upcoming release, writing a new novel, and preparing for query rounds on a ready piece.

Don't compare yourself to others, following the trends of what's popular. Write what you want to write, what you want to read, because it's only by being true to yourself that you'll find your voice.

The best thing about being a writer, to me, is the fact that I can explore any idea I want just to see where it goes. And I'm often taken on journeys that I couldn't have imagined when I started. The world is open to me, just by putting my fingers on my keyboard.

I outline all my writing projects, from short stories to novellas to novels, so writer's block in the middle of a project is usually not a problem because I know what the day's writing should center around.
