Unloving Whispers is about addiction, which is all around us in our culture. I wanted to write a story of healing to illustrate that victory is possible if we are willing to participate and do the hard work of looking at ourselves clearly.

Often ideas come unexpectedly. One story idea came when I met a young woman at a Christmas party. She had a huge dilemma to solve and a few years later I remembered her dilemma and decided to solve it in a novel.

Currently I am taking a break. I published the last novel in a trilogy last September, and because of health issues, I decided to go on a writing sabbatical. Sometimes even the breaks we take are cultivating writing material for the future.

The first thing that came to mind is to be patient, learn your craft and be persevering. Writing success is hard won, at least for most of us. Join a critique group where you will be forced to grow in craft. Try small pieces, like articles, and send them out. Don't be afraid to submit to publications that don't pay anything. Earning credits is important. Even blog posts help to get your writing out there.

Writers are observant. Just ask my husband. Ha ha. We can go to a movie, or while watching a TV show, I will blurt out what's going to happen next. It drives him crazy. Details are important, and often details are what make an intriguing story. I like that part about being a writer.

I don't experience writer's block very often, but if I do, I go back to the last few pages I've written and type them over, to get myself back in the "mode." Usually it works. :)
