My most recent book is so far my only book, and the idea had existed for a long time--during the years Jack and I were farming--but I had conceived of it as a series of short stories. Those years continued to be the focus of the work, but once I began to see it as an actual memoir, it developed a life of its own.

Sometimes with a single bright idea. But more often by sifting through notes and very rough drafts that have been gathering dust for awhile. I'll be thinking "I really do need to be writing" and I'll happen on a half-baked idea that seems to have potential. And sometimes, it actually does.

Not very well, I'm afraid. I didn't become serious about writing until my mid-60s, at which point I found it very hard to establish the kind of disciplined routine that others say is necessary to keep writing through the dry spells.
