Who is your favorite fictional couple, and why?
Elizabeth Amisu This is such a great question. Thank-you. My favourite fictional couple has to be a pair of characters called Sam and Gaia, from Francine Pascal's 'Fearless' series. I absolutely love that series, and the relationship between those two characters was intriguing and it impacted both characters lives long after their romantic tryst was over.

Why did Gordon Finch withdraw from Stoner at the end “in such a way that he could never return.”? What does the passage mean? ". . . he turned to him with a kind of surprise and asked, “Where’s Dave?” And when he saw the shock of fear come over Gordon’s face he shook his head weakly and said, “I’m sorry, Gordon. . . . but Stoner knew that in that instant Gordon Finch had withdrawn from him . . . "
Elizabeth Amisu Hello @John, I know - it's so resonant... and confusing. This line is towards the very end of the narrative, and it's because Stoner's mind is transitioning. He no longer lives completely in the present moment. Part of him is moving through a review of his life experiences. It's also clear that the moment of Dave, Stoner and Finch together at the University was a very formative moment for him. After that moment, it's clear that Finch realises the Stoner he knew is gone, or going. Hence, the withdrawal.

How do you deal with writer’s block?
Elizabeth Amisu I get out of my surroundings and try to immerse myself in something beautiful. A wonderful film, a good book, a piece of music, prayer and worship. It always works.

What’s the best thing about being a writer?
Elizabeth Amisu Creating worlds out of thin air. It's magic. It really is. I feel like a conduit, I've read writers and artists say that but it's true. The good art goes through you, not from you.

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?
Elizabeth Amisu Write. Don't wait to get good at writing. It takes 10,000 hours to become an expert. Don't stop learning and practicing till you've put in 10,000 hours.

What are you currently working on?
Elizabeth Amisu Three books: a series of essays on Michael Jackson's art and life, a series of essays on his short films and a novel for young adults about immortality.

How do you get inspired to write?
Elizabeth Amisu I pray and I wait. I read a lot. I always have a pen handy and I expect inspiration to come at any time.

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?
Elizabeth Amisu From a book I read called 'Man in the Music' and another one written a few hundred years before called 'A Defence of Poesie' by Sidney.
