This is such a great question. Thank-you. My favourite fictional couple has to be a pair of characters called Sam and Gaia, from Francine Pascal's 'Fearless' series. I absolutely love that series, and the relationship between those two characters was intriguing and it impacted both characters lives long after their romantic tryst was over.

Hello @John, I know - it's so resonant... and confusing. This line is towards the very end of the narrative, and it's because Stoner's mind is transitioning. He no longer lives completely in the present moment. Part of him is moving through a review of his life experiences. It's also clear that the moment of Dave, Stoner and Finch together at the University was a very formative moment for him. After that moment, it's clear that Finch realises the Stoner he knew is gone, or going. Hence, the withdrawal.
