Robin Burks Who wouldn't love to live in the world of Harry Potter? Magic? Sign me up! I would love to attend Hogwarts and learn all about potions, spells and fantastic creatures.
Robin Burks My favorite couple is Beatrice and Benedick from Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing. Not only has Beatrice always seemed a very modern woman (especially given the time Shakespeare wrote her), but I love the exchanges between her and Benedick, who seem to hate each other, but soon realize that they are so much alike that they end up falling in love during their machinations throughout the play. Whereas the other couple in the play, Don Pedro and Hero, seem the stuff of the usual fairy tale Romeo & Juliet variety foolish young couple, it's Benedick and Hero that show a more mature love for each other.
Robin Burks I've never really had writer's block, per se, but I've had a lot of days where I've stared at a blank page, frozen, terrified that the words won't come. But I often find that if I just start writing, or typing, that the words always come. They might not always be the best words I've ever written, but they're words nonetheless. Sometimes that's all writing is: putting one word after another.
Robin Burks I love creating new worlds and characters from nothing. The creative act of taking what's inside my head and crafting it into a story is such a thrill.
Robin Burks An "aspiring" writer is someone who hasn't written anything yet. The best advice anyone ever gave me is that "If you write, you're a writer." There's no aspiring to it. Stop aspiring, in fact. And just sit down and write (which is also Neil Gaiman's first rule of writing).
Robin Burks I'm c urrently working on the first book of a series called The Children of Magic. It's sort of like Harry Potter, but set in a more realistic world where magic is a little more mundane and has more limits. I'm currently plotting out the first book, tentatively titled The Dream Maker.
Robin Burks I don't think an author can afford to just wait for inspiration to write. I think just the process of sitting down and writing every day is what makes the story come to life. However, I do find ideas in everything: from TV shows I watch to people I know to dreams I've had. There are ideas everywhere.
Robin Burks My most recent book is a continuation of the story I began in Zeus, Inc., but I wanted to do something bigger and more epic with the Greek mythology in Return of the Titans. Hopefully, I've accomplished that.
