Ditch the "aspiring" and get writing; write what you love, challenge your writing weaknesses, take risks, and above all, have fun with it.

She should have known not to follow. I'd warned her she couldn't unsee the spurting blood, nor the steam that rises as it runs free.

Every day, the strangest things wash up on the beach where I live. Golf balls, shoes, broken pieces of dock, sometimes huge trees with their roots still attached lodge in for a season or two before being swept away in a king tide. I've found a note in a bottle, "call us" tags from ocean researchers, an intact 36" television, but the most interesting was a military shell, 5" in diameter and 2' long. A phone call to the local base prompted an inflatable military vessel pulled up and claim it. Each of these washed up treasures has mystery to it, and a story to tell.

Hi Kathryn, I would recommend Awakening. Though each book stands alone, Awakening is the first book in the series and (IMHO) sets up Emelynn's story best. I do hope you enjoy it!

My current favourite fictional couple is Claire and Jamie Fraser, from Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series. I guess I'm feeling romantic and this couple's romance spans centuries. I'm also eagerly awaiting the next televised instalment...

My most recent book is the fourth in a series so the idea came from the natural growth of the characters and issues raised in previous books. Additionally, readers will sometimes tell me they think "x" is going to happen, or that "y" character is going to (fill in the blank). These remarks are fertile ground for my imagination, and I often build on the idea in the next book.
