First couple that springs to mind is Sherlock and Watson. I know they where never romantically involved (at least, as far as we can tell from the stories) but I think they function so well as friends and as a way 'in' for the reader. Part of Conan Doyle's genius is how he was able to tell stories about an inherently unlikeable person and make us care for him through Watson.
Also, there is something marvellous about two adult men going on exciting adventures together. It's how you imagine your life should be when you are eleven years old: unravel mysteries and be a hero with your best friend by your side.
