I'm glad you enjoyed it! The second book will be from Soraya’s point of view, and will pick up about a month after the first book ends.

Alas, my next book is not scheduled until 2018. But I will be publishing lots of extras from SWORD AND VERSE on my website, including deleted scenes and additional scenes from other characters' points of view.

1) It was an editorial decision to incorporate the passage of time into the story rather than explicit dating various passages. (Fun fact: in the earliest version, many parts of the story were told through letters, and so were explicitly dated.) So now the passage of time is described in the narrative and reinforced by the seasons and passage of annual events such as the Festival of Aqil and Mati's birthday celebration. I am planning to post more information about the Qilarite calendar on my blog later this month as well.
2) The Resistance has been around for a long time, but remember, it is the victors who write history. In this case, the oppressors not only control the country but control the very means to record history. The Resistance has existed in waves over many many years, and each time its leaders are executed and its members scattered, it has had to start over again. That might have been the case this time as well, if someone else had been on the throne.
3) Killing Sotia would have been an admission that Sotia was a threat - that she was, in fact, more powerful than he was - and that is an admission that Gyotia would never, ever make. Instead, he punished her like a naughty child, as a way to show his absolute power. Gyotia is also something of a sadist; he got far more satisfaction out of Sotia's suffering than he would have gotten out of her death.

Yes! Though SWORD AND VERSE functions as a standalone (i.e. no cliffhanger ending!), I am working on a sequel that picks up the action in another character's point of view. The second book should be out in 2018.

It was originally intended to be, but then one of the other characters stepped up and demanded to have her story told, so I am working on the sequel now. But what I really suspect you are asking is : "Is this one of those books where I am going to invest a lot of time reading it and then it ends in a cliffhanger and I have to wait a year or more to find out what happens?" This book does function as a standalone, with what I hope is a satisfying ending. No cliffhangers here! I do hope that once you read it you will want to spend more time with these characters and want to read the sequel though!
