(seriously) And if you can, build yourself a trust group of critique fellows. These arent necessarily friends (although they'll no doubt become friends) and usually not family. These are people who can be honest with you about your writing, whose advice you trust and who arent afraid to hold back their punches. But it shouldn't be all doom and gloom, the best writing partnerships provide real solutions and support as well as hard truths.
Michele de Winton To get the actual words going I go for a walk (if small children permit) or else I just write it out. I have been know to actually type a page of blahblahblah before it turns into drivel and then, finally, back into something I can call writing again. If it's a matter of a plot hole or character flaw getting in the way I'll often pester my ace writing buddies, I find talking things through really helpful (big thanks to Trudi Jaye, Carmen Falcone, Talia Hunter and Bronwen Evans)
Michele de Winton I used to say working in my PJs and being able to swan about inside the head of someone else all day. But now with two small children those days of swanning are long gone (le sigh). Now I still get to inhabit other characters but its more like a quick dive in and out, like jumping into a really cold river - it's sometimes shocking but always refreshing. ;-)
Michele de Winton I have a Christmas title coming out around Thanksgiving. A two book bundle with my writing buddy Carmen Falcone. The two books are independent but linked and full of Christmasy Smexasy goodness!
