Jennifer James I do mind mapping and weird word association. Dance in my kitchen. Work on something unrelated (like painting or making jewelry or scrubbing the bath tub).

I like to interview my characters or try to catch them in a slice of life moment, where a reader would be bored to tears because there's nothing happening that would belong in a story, but the character is living. They're making dinner or watching tv or mating the socks. Writing those things helps.

Or I just have conversations with them, see what happens.
Jennifer James Ugh, that's a tough one. I can't pick just one! :) I think for me, to really get behind a couple there's got to be undeniable, unavoidable, attraction and chemistry, plus a great big helping of mutual respect and admiration. I do love it when there's that push-pull, the humor and snark and hilarity of two people who are so damn perfect for each other it hurts--but they're just going to fight against it until they can't anymore. :)

And when they give in, *ahh* Fireworks.
