A lot of things inspire ideas. Sometimes I'll dream something up. Sometimes I start with a title or a prompt and go from there. Sometimes I see a picture, or hear a song and a story forms.
Ideas for me come rapidly. It's picking ones to use, and refining them, that's the tricky part for me.

Read a lot. Inside the genre you write and outside of it. If you edit yourself, don't rush it, it's a long process, but the extra care and effort will be worth it. Enjoy what you write, if you stop enjoying it, stop and try something else.
