I'm intrigued by the journey, how the male journey varies in different cultures, and how those cultures clash, in history. My last book, Wagon Days, was about the American West, and the tragic chemistry of white settlers and aboriginals. Samurai Road is about the opening of feudal Japan by an expansionist America, and my own attempts to understand how much, and how little, has changed as a result.
