My thrillers are significantly based on my own experiences living in Russia and the Central Asian Republics The 'Stans'). During that period l worked with numerous oligarchs and government departments, and saw how corrupt the system was first-hand. While the main plotlines are fiction, they bear a strong correlation to events that happened, and many of the anecdotes are based on events that happened to me.

I lived and worked in Russia and Central Asia for over ten years, starting with the tumultuous period of the Yeltsin years. In Russia, I was based in Moscow, and while I was in Central Asia, I travelled extensively throughout the various 'Stans' including Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. These are the settings for Corruption of Power. It was an extraordinary period to be there. Although the book is most definitely fiction, many of the anecdotes are based on my actual experiences.

I am somewhat undisciplined in writing the first draft, and this tends to avoid writer's block. While I plan solidly for around six months before writing and work fulltime once the first draft is completed, I treat writing the first draft as very much a part-time job! I fit it in with my social life and write when I feel like it, rather than a set amount each day.
