Liz Trenow To 18th century Spitalfields in London! It's where my family's silk weaving business first began in 1720, and where I set my book The Silk Weaver (The Hidden Thread in US) and also where my latest book The Dressmaker of Draper's Lane (to be published in UK in February 2019) is set. To have been able to visit it would have made my research so much easier!
Liz Trenow Currently, Cora Seagrave and William Ransome from Sarah Perry's The Essex Serpent. They are a strange pair, both eccentric in their different ways and not at all a likely match, but have a compelling attraction that....well I don't want to give any more away! Not sure if this book has yet been published in the US but don't miss it when it is - as surely it will!
Liz Trenow All readers are different, you can't please everyone all of the time! That's what I tell myself. Best wishes Liz
Liz Trenow My inspiration for The Poppy Factory came when I attended the Remembrance Sunday event in my home town, which is a garrison town. As well as being very moving, it got me wondering about the origins of the poppy as a symbol of remembrance, and a visit to the real life Poppy Factory confirmed for me that it would be a fascinating topic around which to set a First World War / Afghan War novel.
Liz Trenow Discovering the extraordinary stories of ordinary people, both in history and today. I love researching and interviewing people in preparation for writing the next novel.
Liz Trenow My fourth novel is historical: set in 1750s in East London, a time of mass migration and industrial unrest, with many resonances with today. I'm loving the manners, the fashions, the silk, and the story of forbidden love between two people who would not normally even be allowed to speak to each other.
Liz Trenow Write every day, whatever you can. And join a group of serious writers so that you can get objective and honest feedback.
Liz Trenow Those moments when you can really picture yourself in a scene and hear your characters, so that it seems almost to write itself. I call it flying!
Liz Trenow I don't usually suffer from writers block but I do have crises of confidence, almost every day. The remedy is just to push onwards and write whatever you can and always remind yourself that you can improve what you've written with the next edit you do.
