Dan Riley By getting up in the morning…yeah it's that easy. I'm thinking about writing from the moment I open my eyes, through my morning stretches, over my cappuccino, until I hit the keyboard.
Dan Riley Just finished The Great Deflategate Conspiracy: A Farce of Our Times. It's a satire on the whole deflategate controversy in the NFL. I've wanted to do a non-fiction book on my team, The New England Patriots, for a long time, but kept running into obstacles for the project I envisioned. Then I decided to do a novel, but just as I was getting into it, deflategate exploded in January. As time went on and I saw that this absurd story was building inexplicable momentum, I changed my focus…and then really narrowed it to take advantage of the controversy for the sake of marketing. So instead of a novel, I decided to make it a novella…and then it became a novelette, which to be honest, I didn't even realize was a form until a few weeks ago.
Dan Riley Same advice I'd have for anyone in a creative pursuit…music, art, acting, filmmaking…you have to keep doing to…all the time…any way possible. Don't put it off and don't let it die.
Dan Riley The independence...the solitary encounter with the blank page with only your imagination to get you through. To take sometime passing to full fruition as a play, a book, or an essay.
Dan Riley I've rarely experienced writer's block, maybe because I consider whatever blockage that comes along as part of the process. In any case, my two go-to remedies have been to put on my headphones and listen to the Rolling Stones at full volume or to go for a nice long quiet walk alone. I do much more of the latter these days, and it always works.
