Stephan Benzkofer I'm so sorry for the delay. Please accept my apologies. Read and write and read and write. And write some more. Also, find somebody to edit your work. Being edited is often painful but always a quick way to learn.
Stephan Benzkofer I've been editing two books for publication in 2017, both dealing with my work at the Chicago Tribune. The first "10 Things You Might Not Know About Nearly Everything" is available now. The second, a beautiful coffee table book about Chicago history, will be available in November.
Stephan Benzkofer I'm so sorry for the delay. Please accept my apologies. I'm inspired to write by what I read (which can also be discouraging). That can be fiction, but also works about writing and the creative process.
Stephan Benzkofer Not to be glib, but the best part is the writing. Not the editing or revising. Certainly not that. But the original act of creation, trying to breath life into a character or a scene or conversation such that you can imagine it connecting with a reader, that can be exhilarating.
Stephan Benzkofer Many days, I struggle to sit down and actually write. That said, I don't have a big problem with writer's block because I'm constantly writing and rewriting scenes and or paragraphs or having conversations in my head so that often I'm forced to get things on paper before I forget it all. Bottom line, though, I write much better if I'm making sure I do it every single day.
Stephan Benzkofer He wrote a book. Nobody noticed.
Stephan Benzkofer "10 things" is a compilation of newspaper columns that ran in the Chicago Tribune from about 2007 to 2012. The column is ongoing (you can find it at chicagotribune.com/10things), and we hope to do a second compilation volume at some time. The ideas for individual installments come from the news of the day, i.e. Stanleys when the Chicago Blackhawks were in the Stanley Cup playoffs.
