Rachel S. Roberts Writer’s block? Every writer I know gets this from time to time. I find if I work hard doing something useful such as laundry, weeding, or cleaning, I start resenting the chore and get anxious to get back to the computer. I rush back as soon as I can, and words and sentences begin to come. (Maybe that’s why my garden never gets completely weeded or my house never gets the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval!) Reading, watching a movie, or listening to music makes me think creatively . If all fails, I go to the kitchen and make soup. There are times when we have soup just about every day! I’m good at making soup! Seriously, a brisk walk, swim, or round of tennis helps clear my mind, as does attending a writer’s group where I participate with others in thoughtful critiques of works read. There is nothing, that can inspire me more to write, however, than to see a finely performed, intriguing play. The trick is to actually write—which often is tedious, difficult, and very solitary, and not to live on ethereal inspiration. Writing is hard work. People who are serious about writing know this. It comes with the territory.
