Hi! Thanks for reading my book. Sorry for the delay in replying. I had no idea this question was sat here!
I drank in a lot of pubs in Maryland/Stratford 2005-2010, so it's a mix of a lot of the old school pubs that were still in the area at the time. Sadly, as predicted in the book, I hear a lot of them have now gone.
In shape, the Eel is closest to The Manby Arms (with its long sweeping bar and pool table round the side). Thr Manby was my local so if they want to stick a blue plaque up anywhere it should probably go there, as I'm sure I thought up a lot of plot in there. I also enjoyed drinking in The Railway Tavern, Royal Oak and Lord Tredegar (Mile End) and probably borrowed a bit from them.
If you were hoping I'd name a pub that got round the smoking ban, I never found one.
