From my time in Italy, and a love of place. And in a very roundabout way, a book called Rising Ground - it has nothing in common with the book I'm currently writing, except that it deals with the influence that places have on their people.

Being passionate about something or someone. A little wine and cheese (preferably goat) also helps - its company can tempt me to sit down and work.

The day-job's keeping me pretty busy at the moment, but I'm also working on a synopsis for another novel (set in Italy).

Keep working at it - writing tends to get easier, and better, the more you put into it. Don't send things out to agents/publishers until it really is ready (I'm sure I made that mistake many times). And never give up - statistically, it might be most likely that nothing ever comes of it, but you only need to get lucky once.

I imagine a sense of freedom would be the best aspect of being a full-time writer. More generally, I guess the best thing is a feeling of satisfaction at having created something that didn't exist beforehand, and which hopefully people will enjoy reading. It's also good when you lose yourself in what you're doing - when it's suddenly 4am and you hadn't even realised you'd passed midnight.

Walk away and come back again later when you're in a different mood. Actually, I don't write every day - I also have a full-time job - so when I manage to sit down and write it's usually the case that I know what I want to do, so writer's block hasn't been much of a problem so far.
